Indigenous Communications Officer

Job Description
Attawapiskat First Nation is seeking a reliable, organized, and professional Communications Officer. The Communications Officer supports the planning, development, and delivery of internal and external communications for Attawapiskat First Nation. Under the supervision of the Director of Operations or designated supervisor, the intern assists in creating engaging and culturally respectful content that promotes AFN programs, services, initiatives, events, and community achievements.
Key Responsibilities
- Help create and share community notices, updates, and information in print and online.
- Update the First Nation’s website, social media pages, and internal communication tools.
- Assist with live streaming meetings, announcements, and community events.
- Help write and format reports, meeting notes, presentations, newsletters, and public documents.
- Provide administrative communication support, including scheduling, filing, updating contact lists, and record keeping.
- Gather accurate and timely information from departments for community updates.
- Track community questions and feedback to help improve communication with Administration and Chief and Council.
- Participate in training and mentorship to develop communication, digital, and workplace skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams).
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Knowledge of First Nation governance and administration is considered an asset
